the weather report, small world project

yippee! it was sunny again yesterday for a while! not that you can tell from this photo

but trust me, the sun was shining.

today, however, promises wind storms with gusts up to 50 mph. (er, i'm too lazy to convert to kph this morning. sorry. let's just say that winds of this speed are really strong and leave it at that.)

i was trying to put my kite together this morning so i could watch it be destroyed in the gales but i've given up.

anyway, last night abc news ran a report that i was actually interested in for once. it was, in essence, about columbia university's small world project and it featured four random people in nyc who found that they were connected by six contacts or less.

i'm a lot more impressed by these sorts of things when they happen on a nationwide or worldwide scale instead of in one city. (like the "maven package delivery" example in malcolm gladwell's the tipping point. (er, at least i think it was the tipping point. i don't remember. it's been years since i've read that.))

anyway, yes, it's more impressive when it happens on a larger scale but it's still interesting to me to watch the interconnections in people's relationships function in real time (or at least tv time.)

where was i going with this? oh, hell if i know. it's too early for me to think coherently. plus i'm faced with three daunting craft tasks and i don't really want to do any of them today. (my wrist hurts from all the damn needlework and i can't find my brace. grrr!)

so yeah, today will be windy with a slight chance of bitching. i hope that there's something fun buried in the midst of it.

i'll bet that it would be much easier to do the small world project now that we both have so many more international contacts on flickr.

would that be cheating? nah, it couldn't be since small world is email contact only, right?

i think it's awesome that you made the connection to the prof at cornell in four steps!! how cool!!
