text message

last janurary 1st i made a resolution to read 150 books in 2004.

well, it doesn't look like i'm going to be able to meet quota, but, to date, i've read 132. (and that's not counting the ones that i got so fed up with that i threw them across the room. citizen girl, anyone?)

i'll provide the final tally new year's day. who knows, i might be able to squeeze two more books in before 2005. i mean, i did read naked pictures of famous people in its entirety today.

of course, that's not saying much...

radio radio

bunchofpants turned me on to a great radio station-- wxdu (durham, north carolina).

they have an internet simulcast, so give 'em a listen! (esp. when ms. pants is on the mic! (she's on every other wednesday from 4-6 pm est (plus occasional "world" shows saturdays from 1-3 pm est))

homebound

you know how i mentioned yesterday that i was going to see "the life aquatic"? well, i didn't. because the roads in the f###ing town are still f###ing iced over.

which means that i haven't left my apartment in four f###ing days! i'm about to lose it! i really, really am! grrrrrr!!!

at least it's supposed to be above 50f /10c tomorrow, so maybe all of this goddamned ice will finally melt and i can go do something outside of my domicile.

this just proves one thing, i'm not cut out for prision. and it also make me wonder how my agoraphobic neighbor from a few years back could tolerate being in the same space for so long.

happy holidays to ME!

the day has finally arrived! that's right, cats and kittens, the life aquatic with steve zissou starts today! TODAY!!!

hooray!!!! i know exactly where i'm gonna' be at 1:10pm, icy roads or no freakin' icy roads!

oh yeah, also, happy holidays to all of you that celebrate!

better propaganda

this has got to be, hands down, my favorite source of legal mp3s.

better propaganda has a pretty varied selection of rock, hip hop, electronic and "other". and it updates daily-like.

go use it now! because their disinformation is better'n yours!

cabin fever

what is it about being snowbound that makes me crave curry? and sushi? and lime tortilla chips? and very red wine?

is it because i have none of these things in my house?

of course it is.

dammit.

ring a ding ding!

i don't wear rings because i have a nasty habit of twisting them 'round and 'round my fingers when i'm nervous.

but i think i could break the habit if i had this rock on ring! (found via awful cufflinks)

i'm also quite covetous of the taroshoten skull ring at the giant robot store, but they always sell out of it, so i can't link to a picture. [sad emoticon]

salon loves us

okok, as you probably know, i am part of the flickrati. (see my flickr feed on the top right hand side of the main page for proof.)

what you may or may not know is that salon recently published an article (watching a brief ad is required to access the whole article. sorry.) about flickr.

what's really exciting is that this article had links to lots of my flickr friends' groups! (and mine too! whoo!)

so hooray for leff,
groc,
snapatorium,
vanita,
mattl and
striatic! (hopefully, i haven't forgotten anyone!)

fickle, fickle....

please allow me to bitch about the weather just once more. (any more entries about it and i'll start to sound like henry darger! see, he kept these extensive journals about the weather...oh, never mind.)

so yesterday it was bone achingly cold, right? well, today i have the windows open, the birds are a chirpin' and it's freakin' 59 degrees fahrenheit!!/15 in celcius!!!

sheesh, make up your mind already, you stupid season!

Monday, December 20, 2004

old man winter can bite my a##

so this morning it was 17 degrees fahrenheit outside. (that's around -8 or so celsius, for all my non u.s. readers).

what the hell is winter trying to prove by making it so cold? ok, i get it! winter can be cold! brrrr! *eyeroll*

now can you just warm the hell up already?!?

chr*st, i can't wait until spring.....

more noodles!

as requested by d', here is calvo's rockinest peanut noodle recipe! (i hope you don't mind, calvo.)

okok, put all of these together over med heat:

1/3 cup peanut butter
1/3 cup rice wine vinegar
1/3 cup sesame oil
1/3 cup soy sauce

1 tsp powdered ginger
1-2 tsp red pepper
bunches of chopped garlic (2 or 3 or more cloves)

and then dump over a ton of pasta. seriously. it will cover a lot of pasta.
i used udon, but you can use whatever.

oh, also add some veg if you like. i added broccoli.

it doesn't take long at all to make and this is what you get:

calvo's peanut noodles (flickr feast no. 6)

so, you know, make some already!

anyone can play skeltar

all four of you who read this blog are going to start thinking that i find all of my cool links from boing boing. and you'd be right. because i do.

case in point, here's another linky link from the wunderbar boing boing! this time it's a skeleton guitar, or skeltar as it's known in the business. (actually, it's probably not. i just like to type those words.)

if i'd had one of these when i was a tiny rocker, i might never have stopped playing.

sigh..

(found via, you guessed it, the incredible, edible boing boing)

cold sesame noodles with tofu

my friends calvo and second hand rose from flickr liked the looks of my noodles so much, that i decided to post the recipe here.

it's from the premiere episode of chow magazine which is a great little publication. you should pick it up! (thanks for the gift subscription, katie kat! *smoooches!*)

here's what it looks like

cold sesame noodles with tofu

and here's the recipe:

2 1/2 oz dry udon or buckwheat noodles
2 tbs veg oil
4 oz tofu, cut into 1/2 inch cubes
salt and pepper
2 tbs pure sesame oil
1 tbs peeled and chopped fresh ginger
1 garlic clove, peeled and chopped
1 pinch red chili flakes
1 green onion, sliced
1 tbs soy sauce
1 tbs lemon juice
1 tbs sugar
1 small cucumber, halved lengthwise, then cut crosswise into 1/8 inch pieces
1 samll red pepper, sliced into thin strips

bring a large pot of water to a rapid boil. cook the noodles until tender. drain, rinse well with cool water, and drain again: set aside

heat a saute pan over high heat. after a minute, add the veg oil and heat it until it begins to smoke. with a spatula, carefully place the tofu in the pan. brown both sides of the tofu. remove the tofu and place it on a paper towel to drain. sprinkle with salt and pepper

add the sesame oil, ginger and garlic to the warm pan. cook over low heat to infuse the oil with the flavors; the garlic and ginger should not brown at all. remove the pan from the heat and add the chili flakes.
using a rubber spatula, scrape the ginger mixture into a mixing bowl. add the green onion, soy sauce, lemon juice and sugar, and mix. add noodles, cucumber and bell pepper. toss well and eat!

wow. what a difference.....

oh, poor cocksuck...er, i mean blockbuster video. boo hoo! it can't compete with netflix! *sobbing*

now poor ballbust...er, i mean blockbuster has to get rid of their late fees. *tee hee!* er, i mean, *weeping!* (found via boing boing.)

in related news, go, netflix, go!!! long live netflix!!!

i hate m*a*s*h.

i hate seeing it when i flip past the hallmark channel.

i hate that it's on after "perry mason".

i hate m*a*s*h. it's just not funny anymore.

that is all.

it's a uterus, not a uteryou

i know that boing boing and not martha have both already written about it, but i can't help mentioning the knitted uterus in the winter knitty.

oh, baby! one of the best wombs either uteri have ever seen! period!

froogle wish list

ok, so i can't make it any easier than this.

now stop your whinin'!

just came in to see what condition my subscription was in

look, folks. i'm serious about not wanting things.

but since a few of you out there (and you know who you are) don't seem to think my ideas to date have been adequate enough and are still in this get-rakka-a-present mode, here is another idea.

get me a magazine subscription. (sorry, chow magazine has already been sent to me. you need to work faster, people! (heh heh!))

any of these would do.

giant robot
budget living
seed
mass appeal
tokion
art forum
modern painters
olive

and that should just about cover it.

but for the love of pete, if you're part of my family, don't get me sweet action, as it's rather pornish.
actually, it's all pornish. so sue me.

heart disease now only $5.49, plus tax!

holy jesus christ on a f-ing sesame seed bun, this is disgusting!

hardee's has just announced its plans to sell the monster thickburger. which consists of, and i quote " two 1/3-lb. charbroiled patties, topped with no less than four strips of crispy bacon, three slices of American cheese, and some mayonnaise".

eegads!

catster!

i'm a little slow on the draw with this one. but thanks to emdot, my cats now have their own webpages on catster! (thanks, emdot!)

here are the links for ms peel, fujiko, clouseau and the bumblepants herself, ava.

yes, we have four cats. yes, it makes us certifiable.

more seasonal gifties

i'm hard to find presents for, i know this. this (and the fact that the money spent would be best sent to a charity, like, say, this one (warning: crappy site) or maybe this one?) is why i insist that you don't get me presents!

but for those of you who are still insisting upon getting me something here are some more ideas! heads of state silkscreens! (found via plainsimple)

i like detachment kit, sputnik, cat power and rogue wave.

but, you know, you've got better things to spend your money on.

i heart heart cookies

tonight alton brown, the host of "good eats" on food network, was at davis kidd bookstore in memphis.

but instead of plunking down $25 (u.s.) for the "privilege" of meeting herr chef, i decided to just make some cookies instead.

specifically a recipe from claire crespo. here's how i did it.

Sunday, November 21, 2004

oh my!

sarah cihat makes very cool rehabed dishware!

and i can buy some of them in memphis! *eeep!!*

dead or "larry king live"?

every time i flip past "larry king live" and see a celebrity or head of state, i always wonder if that person is dead or just being interviewed by larry king.

surely, this doesn't happen to just me....right?

more books

a better name for citizen girl by emma mclaughlin and nicola kraus would be citizen hurl since my overwhelming urge to vomit precluded me from reading past page 34.

it also begs the question, why does it take two people to write such a steaming pile of crap?

the wit and wisdom of quentin crisp, however, was quite witty and urbane. which is what one would expect from quentin crisp. i cannot wait to get my grubby little hands on more of his writing.

trying not to jinx myself

yesterday was horrible.

stinking, rotten horrible.

but today, i may have found a way out of the unfulfilling rut that i've been stuck in for nigh on two years.

no details yet since i don't want to jinx myself. wish me luck! (i'll stop being so vague once i've worked out the facts!)

seasonal gift giving holiday type dealie

for all of you who insist upon hoisting presents upon me (even though i insist you don't, please) and are confused as to what to gift me (since, if you knew me, you'd know i wouldn't want anything, please) , here is a helpful link!

i like lots! (but i'd rather not recieve anything. thanks ever so much!)

file under "poor me! *boo hoo!*"

todayborday is a working day. not that i really care, i could use the money. it's just that, it being saturday and cold and all, no one is going to show up. (my job is contingent upon the appearence of other people. i cannot administer a test to a void.)

so it will be a 45 minute communte to sit for 15 minutes and then another 45 minute commute home.

sigh....

at least i'm able to charge the company for two hours.

holiday flavoring

not to be outdone by last year's turkey and gravy soda, jones is releasing a five pack of holiday flavors this year.

the pack includes cranberry, mashed potatoes and butter, green bean casserole, fruitcake and everyone's favorite, turkey and gravy.

it goes on sale tomorrow online and in select target stores. here's the link but if you get some soda and i don't heads will roll.

and i don't mean buttered roll either!

many thanks

lots of love to leff who helped me get a leg up on the pile (and refinance my dreams) with this blog's appearance.

thank you! thank you! thank you!

small things

*the elevator in my building is squeaking like some sort of machinery from 1900 that hasn't been properly oiled. i live next to the elevator and this noise is starting to drive me a tad bit nuts.

*i purchased a new brand of deodorant yesterday and am not used to how it smells. so every time that i raise my arm i keep wondering why the apartment smells like flowers.

*bill bryson's i'm a stranger here myself: notes on returning to america after twenty years away is an amusing read. i would highly recommend it.

*sean astin's there and back again: an actor's tale is not. i can't believe i wasted part of my life on that book.

bandsplosion

finally some bands/people worth listening to are playing in memphis.
holly golightly is at the hi tone on nov. 10th and the hives are at the daisy on nov. 28

of course, if i want to see sondre lerche, i'll have to skip town. which doesn't look like it's gonna' be happening. (sad emoticon)

this city bites. i can't wait to move.
